The DGS bulletin also reveals that 5,829 people are hospitalised, 241 less, of which 853 in intensive care units, that is, nine less.

Today's data also indicates that 8,781 people have been reported recovered, bringing the total number of recovered since the start of the pandemic in Portugal to 636,859.

Active cases in Portugal are also registering a decrease. There are 123,312 people with the active virus, 4,555 less compared to Tuesday.

Since March 2020, Portugal has recorded 14,718 deaths associated with Covid-19 and 774,889 cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection.

Health authorities have 162,566 contacts under surveillance, down 8,988 from the previous day. This indicator has also registered a consistent decline since 30 January.

Regarding the 161 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, 77 occurred in Lisbon and Tagus Valley, 33 in the North region, 31 in the Centre region, 12 in Alentejo, six in the Algarve region, one in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and one in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 2,192 new infections have been reported, with 290,071 cases and 5,982 deaths counted so far.

Lisbon and Tagus Valley now has 49.9 percent of the total number of new cases at national level and 47.8 percent of deaths recorded in the last 24 hours.

The North region registered 1,050 new infections by SARS-CoV-2 in the last 24 hours and since the start of the pandemic there have been 319,127 cases of infection and 4,917 deaths.

In the Centre region, 775 more cases were reported, accumulating 110,616 infections and 2,624 deaths.

In Alentejo 185 more cases were reported, totalling 27,303 infections and 841 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal.

The Algarve region has 129 new cases notified today, adding 18,992 infections and 271 deaths.

Madeira registered 47 new cases. This autonomous region accounts for 5,142 infections and 55 deaths due to covid-19.

In the Autonomous Region of the Azores, nine new cases were registered in the last 24 hours, adding up to 3,638 infections and 28 deaths.

The confirmed cases are distributed across all age groups, with the highest number of infections recorded between 20 and 59 years old.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 350,138 men and 424,496 women in Portugal, according to data from the DGS, according to which there are 255 cases of unknown gender, which are under investigation, as these data are not provided automatically.

Of the total number of deaths, 7,661 were men and 7,057 women.

The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old, followed by the age group between 70 and 79 years old.

Of the total 14,718 deaths, 9,857 were people aged over 80 years, 3,043 were aged between 70 and 79 years and 1,261 were aged between 60 and 69 years.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 2,341,496 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 106.8 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French agency AFP.
