The vice president of the PSD bench Ricardo Baptista Lei accused the minister of Health for leaving the National Health Service (SNS) “weakened” and “aimless”.
“The socialist management model has failed (…). Therefore, we clearly state that the current management and financing model of the NHS is wrong and has to change”, he defended.
The deputy and doctor made the commitment that, if the PSD were in Government, it would make it a priority “to reform the NHS and the health system as a whole”.
These reforms, he detailed, will involve, on the one hand, the immediate implementation of “emergency measures” that respond to the needs of patients.
“With the PSD, all Portuguese people who today do not have access to a family doctor will have immediate access to an assistant doctor”, he assured.
How? According to other sources, there are not enough doctors in the country - every doctor who can, either leaves or works in the private sector.

Forgive any student loans to medicos and the like who indenture themselves to the state for 10 years. How else are you going to retain staff if debt and low wages are all there is to look forward to?

This head doctor is already a house doctor and the head doctor for its small hospital /clinic. It's already alarming when people have emergencies and would rather travel another hour to get treated. Or let alone go get professional medical help from Lisbon and other hospitals.

These are the things that people only want to see but the truth is that all is not as it seems. There are people who have good intentions and vision to see progress for its residents. There are some in position of authority that should not be. They are talking about maintaining and doing small fixes to already well maintained infrastructure what about infrastructure that is in dire need to be fixed and uplifted. Let's get serious about this instead of public displays and playing politics. Regardless of what elected party anyone belongs to they should have the integrity of electing individuals on principle, integrity and who is responsible and able to be human and courteous and decent towards individuals who trust them to oversee their needs in health, public service and other. This seems to be a family and friends only operations a need to transparent and honest. Sadly, I think that is asking way to much. I wish nothing more than success for this elected official but I have to ask do they take the position of public service seriously or the role has important public figureswho needs to be respected and given attention. Leadership is not a red carpet it is actually getting down and dirty and rolling up sleeves along side the general public not the wealthy. There are some serious issues that need to be fixed and sorted out but we will again see if any of those who have done wrong will be held accountable at all. Or do they keep their status and credentials and position simply because they are a political member as well as a head doctor.
