On Tuesday, 12 April, the Algarve Archaeological Association (AAA) will be presenting two lectures, in English, by Dr Campbell Price.
The first lecture will be at 2.30pm at the Museu do Traje in São Bras, the second lecture will be at 6pm at the Convento de São José in Lagoa.
Dr Campbell Price will be talking about the Golden Mummies of Egypt, the subject of an international exhibition on tour from Manchester Museum. In 1888, British archaeologist W.M. Flinders Petrie arrived at the Egyptian site of Hawara, where he expected to unearth a cemetery contemporary with the pyramid and associated temple (the so-called 'Labyrinth') of Amenemhat III of Dynasty 12. Instead, he discovered thousands of mummies of Graeco-Roman date (c.300BC-AD300), a small proportion of which were decorated with gold leaf and painted portraits. These finds epitomise our obsession with, and expectations of, Egyptian ideals of beauty and wealth. This lecture reviews Petrie's finds and their reception in the context of an international touring exhibition from Manchester Museum which opened in February 2020.
Non-members are welcome to attend AAA lectures for a €5 admission fee, with all money raised by the AAA being used for archaeological grants and speakers.
