According to the European Commission document, 34% of the
1,006 respondents in Portugal (26,509 in the European total) considered that
levels of corruption had not changed and only 6% argued that there had been a
decrease in this period, falling short of the global data recorded by the
European Union (EU) in these two categories: 43% and 9%, respectively. The
answer “there is no corruption” had 0%, both in Portugal and in Europe.
Regarding the common nature of the problem of corruption in
the respective country, the perception in Portugal is again clearly higher than
the total in the 27 member states, with 90% defending that this crime is common
at the national level and only 68% indicating this idea for community space.
Compared to 2019, Portugal even registered a drop of four percentage points in
relation to this perception of a common problem.
