According to data from Nielsen, released by the Instituto da
Vinha e do Vinho (IVV), between January and June, wine sales in large retail
stores fell by 9.8% in volume and 4.8% in value, to a total of 92 million litres
(10 million less than in the same period last year) and 240.2 million euros (12
million less than in 2021).
On the other hand, sales in restaurants soared, with
increases of 221.8% in volume and 241.8% in value. In total, during the first
half of the year, 38 million litres were consumed, amounting to 263 million
euros.
Also according to Nielsen, the average price per litre sold
in large retailers is 2.61 euros and 6.91 euros in restaurants. In terms of
regions, Alentejo wine is the big favourite, securing a total market share of
23%. Douro and Verde wines follow, with shares of 13.6% and 9.1%, respectively.
Glad to hear that restaurant and local consumption of wine has gone up 221%; lets hope they're not getting into their cars like that as traffic incidents seem to have accelerated as well. It makes perfect sense though. Fires, $ problems, unemployment, gun violence (US) politics, floods, hurricanes +++, everyone needs to tranquilize. But gotta say, the Portugal wines and Port are excellent so enjoy.
