I can only comment on what I have heard from the Americans I
have had contact with, but the common theme is, we are less than happy with the
future of democracy in the USA, the crime in the USA and the institutions in
the USA. The original promises Trump made in 2016 were clearly attractive, it achieved
his election as President. He promised to ‘drain the swamp’. This referred to
all that he felt that was wrong with America particularly relating to the US
political landscape and his election slogan of “Make America Great Again”
attracted a number of disaffected US citizens. What followed when he stood for
re-election and failed to win, raised fears about the future of democracy in
America.
American democracy in
crises
The New Yorker published an article on the future of
democracy and said “Our democracy is in crisis. Many institutions of our
government are dysfunctional and getting worse. Our electoral system has
produced, in a single generation, two Presidents who received fewer votes than
their opponents. A changed media landscape has—with the shrewd assistance of
malicious actors at home and abroad—loosened our collective grasp on reality.
Our politics have become alarmingly acrimonious; one of the potential disasters
of the 2020 election is a result that is widely considered illegitimate.
Technology is enriching some and leaving many others behind. Meanwhile, as the
country’s demography shifts, a nativist far-right is resurgent. Although
President Donald Trump, with his scant regard for the values of justice and the
rule of law, is undeniably a leading actor in this crisis, it precedes him and
seems certain to persist after his departure, whenever that may be”.
The Economist said
Americans are anxious
Earlier this year, the highly respected publication, The
Economist wrote “Americans are anxious about the stability of their
democracy. Roughly 40 percent of the politically active say that members of the
other tribe are evil; 60 percent believe they are a threat to the country. More
than 80 percent think the system needs “major changes” or “complete reform”.
Jeremiads from pundits about the decay of political life no longer seem to
match the gravity of the threat. Some scholars have gone so far as to warn of
the risk of civil war. All this became dangerously real in the attack by Trump
supporters on the Capitol a year ago, which left many injured police officers
and Trump supporters, in an attempt to prevent the certification of their
champion’s defeat”.
Donald Trump
One unkind journalist observed the Trumps ego was so big you
could see it from the moon. I am far from qualified enough to comment on
American politics, but I do follow the activities of Donald Trump in the
American mainstream media. I became fascinated with his activities since his
inauguration ceremony in January 2017, which was live, of course, on TV. Trump
claimed, “the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period, both in
person and around the globe”. The empty stands and public areas were clear for
all to see. The New York Times estimated that
Trump had drawn a crowd of about one-third the size of Obama’s, which
was thought to be a record turnout of 1.8 million. This exaggerated claim alone
indicated that we were about to witness an ‘interesting’ presidency.
This was only the
start
Donald Trump’s presidency was, to put it mildly,
‘interesting’. He had strong views about politics and especially about America’s
position in the World. It’s far from clear how many Americans supported his
views, but when the time for the election came around, he lost. Although Trump
was not willing to accept that he had lost, courts in America, right up to the
supreme court, denied his claim that the election had been fraudulent.
January 6th, 2021, is a date that has gone down in history.
Donald Trumps supporters invaded the Capital, the American seat of government,
in an attempt to prevent the certification of his defeat to Joe Biden in the
presidential race weeks beforehand. Four people died and over 150 were injured.
Was this organised or encouraged by Trump? That’s for the American courts to
decide. Trumps later comment was “I know your pain, I know you’re hurt. We had
an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election, and everyone knows
it, especially the other side.
Mainstream media and the courts didn’t agree that Trump had
won the election. He still continues to claim the election was fraudulent and
‘stolen’ from him. This has become known as the ‘big lie’. When a democratic
election is challenged by mob violence, you know democracy as we know it is
under threat. Perhaps that is why many Americans are looking for a safer place
to live.
Trump battles on, so
do the authorities
Is it perhaps too far fetched to speculate that Trump thinks
the presidency is like a TV show? He made his name with ‘The Apprentice’, many
contestants lost, Donald Trump never lost.
Since January 6th we have all witnessed the most amazing
developments of the ex-presidents’ antics. Top Secret documents ‘removed’ from
the White House, court case after court case about his tax affairs, the running
of his companies, the list goes on.
Is ‘The Swamp’
fighting back?
Trump defends the many actions being taken against him as
‘The Swamp’ taking revenge on him. He believes other presidents and
presidential hopefuls, such as Hillary Clinton with her email servers, have
done the same sort of thing he is being accused of, but not punished as he is
being punished. Then there was the nearly two-year special counsel
investigation of Russian election interference led by the FBI’s Robert Mueller
that cost nearly $32 million in total, a filing from the Justice Department
shows according to CNBC. The reality is we as mere mortals just do not really
know what is going on.
Trump is reported to have stated that if the authorities
issue any proceedings against him, that America will see riots on the streets
like never seen before. That sounds like a serious threat. Would his supporters
take to the streets in a manner like January 6th, it’s certainly possible. It
can’t be considered as an empty threat.
The Washington Post reported on October 6th “A majority of
Republican nominees on the ballot this November for the House, Senate and key
state-wide offices — 299 in all — have denied or questioned the outcome of
the last presidential election, according to a Washington Post analysis”.
Trump has many supporters who consider that he is the best
way forward for America. He is reported to have said that if he was elected
president again, he would seriously disable or reduce the power of the courts,
the police and the FBI. It has even been
suggested that he would make the presidency a permanent position, and not
subject to periodic democratic elections.
I can understand why many Americans are looking for a safer
place to live. Welcome to Portugal!
Resident in Portugal for 50 years, publishing and writing about Portugal since 1977. Privileged to have seen, firsthand, Portugal progress from a dictatorship (1974) into a stable democracy.
I found the article to be what we call in the US, a hit job. It was slanted, not truthful and the only thing accurate was that he is not an American and certainly does not understand the US or our history. I would suggest he read some of the old press articles from the days of our founders and then tell me the discourse is worse now. Throughout the history the US, we have had an adversarial political process with extreme views from both parties, BUT when threatened by any outside force we have risen together. Trump as well as Biden made many promises that they could not keep because neither had the legislative control needed to carry out their plans. The people in voting have created the mess we are in by not giving one or the other party the control they need. In closing anyone could write a similar article about any other country and with the same outcome

The answer to this question is due to the actions, thoughts, and comments of one man, the man you picture to introduce the article, Donald Trump. No one in US history has done more to damage the United States; he is the beginning of our end.

The US is and will remain in the foreseeable future, a magnanimous, continental nation that with its greatness and opulence that comes from the characteristic obsession with 'big' things, creates its own gravitational orb and gravitates almost exclusively towards itself and its interests, one may add, as it should. Trump did accomplised an almost unthinkable situation in 2016 though, he made that nation less great, again.

Thank you Paul for writing this article. I've learned so much about Portugal from reading the Portugal News every day for more than a year now, good job!
I live in Portland, Oregon, and I'm moving to Portugal in 2023. The very disturbing political atmosphere in America is not my only reason for moving, but it's definitely part of it. I actually made my decision to retire overseas when I was nineteen years old, and I'm now sixty-seven, and retired.
The US elections are only 28 days away now, on November 8th. It's simply not possible to overstate the importance of this election to the future of America.
If our election results favor the right-wing trump group, the out-migration of American families to other countries, including Portugal, will significantly increase. This is a certainty, as people will always choose to live in peaceful conditions if they can.
It's my hope that all Americans living in Portugal will be completely respectful of your wonderful peaceful culture, and your families, and all of your norms and laws; I very much expect that this will be the case.
Again, thank you for your article, and I wish everyone in Portugal the very, very best!

This is not really accurate. Not really sure why this is all aimed at Trump? He hasn’t been in office for a long time now and the current administration under Biden is absolutely wrecking the country. Might want to really look up the facts before reporting on something like this.

What a ridiculous article. Quoting left leaning fake news like the Economist, Washington Post and the New York time. Why don't you write about how the regime under the current demented man who occupies the White House has used the Department of Justice as his own police force to go after political opponents. Why don't you write about how the current Leftist regimes is using its influence with Social Media to censor people who have different opinions on health care and politics. Why don't you write about people leaving because of the current regimes creation of massive inflation and higher cost of living, higher taxes or the insertion of 87,000 new IRS agents coming after small business. By writing your article you are doing exactly what the left leaning mainstream media is doing in the United States, you are intentionally trying to separate people which is why most people leave the U.S. The U.S. has corrupt politicians, corrupt Media and corrupt central banks. All countries have this. But in Portugal, the weather is beautiful, the people are nice and the cost of living is better.

Very well put Steve from beautiful Oregon that rivals Portugal. For any of the above people that think "rubbish" or "slanted" you either have NOT lived it in the US or are "brainwashed by Fox news (68% of all tv shares) or get your news from Facebook and don't understand why Portugal with it's beauty and "civility" has called us to move because of the deterioration of the US through corruptive politics by Trump. From the moment he announced his run for president saying all Mexicans are criminals and black countries are s-holes, this white supremacist racist has attacked every bastian of democracy. The Maga group has intimidated democratic poll workers with death threats so only republicans are counting our votes; how do you think that will go. All you you that support this Hitler like cult are going to be really sorry by 2024 when your health care and social security you paid into is dissolved and you have an authoritarian government that YOU have no vote in. I'll be studying Portuguese and volunteering to help needy people and animals in Porto, IN PEACE. Civil war is coming to the US after Nov. 6th like the 1/6/20 attack on the Capitol, lots of people will die because of Trumpism and The Big Lie that he won and was cheated and now any Republican that doesn't REALLY win will claim victory and say they were cheated to have people rise-up in arms. The US is a mess and if it bothers you that we are fleeing to a better place like so many people in war torn countries filled with racism and hate do then I ask you WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Tell me because it's gone much too far to correct and Biden TRIED to reach across the aisle and they f'd him. He, unlike the selfish and evil Trump, is a good man tackling all on his plate.

As well it might have been you that put up that analogy of the "ripped and tattered" American flag that got all the right wingers up in arms. It was very foretelling and it's all starting to happen now here in the US and sooo many people just don't get how bad it is and is going to be. Trump, Hitler, Mousillini, Bolsinaro and Victor Orbon; do people really think they care about them, how sad, lemmings walking like zombies staring at Facebook while walking. I see it here in Miami all day long; glad I'm moving to Portugal with no guns, no Trump.

Strange to see people disagreeing with this. Do Trumpers move to Portugal? I hope not. In any case, 2020 in Trump's America was the final straw for me. Seeing my city invaded by National Guard soldiers under Trump's order...tanks in the streets of Santa Monica...soldiers with machine guns inexplicably guarding a boarded up Starbucks (lol)...police officers with absolute impunity assaulting peaceful BLM protesters...and as the author mentions, the feeling that a large swath of the population suddenly believes in some alternative-fact reality based on 24/7 propaganda fear-based "news." And this is on top of our crumbling institutions that the govt has stopped investing in, and this widespread resistance to contributing to the greater good because "socialism bad." We saw a lot of this in 2020 around refusals to wear masks. But to be clear, I had been spending more time overseas, including Portugal, and felt its culture better aligned with my values. Here I'm not assaulted by sales pitches and hustle culture. Portuguese people seem to understand what truly matters in life. Feels so much more peaceful in Portugal and I'm happy to call it home.

Americans are very welcome to Portugal. But we had never seen so many, even young families, moving here. This is not a country with the same opportunities and standard of living: it does make one wonder what is going on. European security, finance and culture are tied to America.
By Alex from Lisbon on 12 Oct 2022, 11:08
A lot to say on the political front, by the author and others. I can get why the impression that "Trump is to blame" forms the core of the article, but that in itself in simplistic.
What shocked me however is that one core and real reason for moving is not mentioned at all, and that's economics. With the Euro declining steadily over the past 8 months, and now well below the much publicised "parity", (0.97 Euros to the dollar as I write this) Americans are getting a 30% discount on everything they purchase in Europe. That, combined with the relatively inexpensive cost of living, is a major draw-card. In fact for middle-aged Americans nearing or in retirement, why would you not move.
To clarify: I am not American, I have without any other motivation invested heavily (for me and my means) into Portugal, as I simply enjoy the place, the people and the more relaxed atmosphere in the country. I still a business outside Portugal.
By Tony Williams from Alentejo on 12 Oct 2022, 11:11
Excellent summary of Trump and the current status of democracy in the US. Trump supporters never, ever concede he has any faults and most support him without question. Look at history to see how this devotion resulted in the past.
But, to the real point of the article, which is why Americans are leaving the US for Portugal. My daughter is adopted from China and she has been bullied and assaulted for her race more times than I want to admit. My husband and I recognized a few years ago that Trump embodies and enables racist beliefs and actions. We decided to find a place for our daughter to relocate should the US environment become too toxic. It feels borderline and the upcoming election will be very revealing. We support Biden's leadership in favor of NATO and Ukraine. We acknowledge Biden isn't perfect. We support facts not conjecture or lies. Portugal is a beautiful country with a rich history and social programs that we support. We're still learning a great deal about living in Portugal but love it! The hardest part is the language and greatly appreciate all those Portuguese who are willing to converse with us in our mixed English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

This author's comments capture what the issues are for some Americans. I am somewhat embarrassed to be associated with the USA now with the rise of semi-fascism and the mentality of lying and bigotry that arose especially during the politically damaging Trump era. The USA is now only a pseudo-democracy (https://www.eiu.com/n/campaigns/democracy-index-2021), with gerrymandering of areas designed to favor one or other of the major parties in the election of politicians to the House of Representatives, voter suppression tactics, the Senate having a grossly unequal system of representation, presidential candidates being elected with fewer votes than their opponents, the rise of conspiracy theories and false claims (i.e, lacking evidence) about valid election results, and Supreme Court justices being appointed by these presidents being some of the major flaws evident in the political system. Portugal is more attractive than living in this type of environment. Some Americans are also ignorant about so-called socialism and view it as a dirty word even though the country has a number of social welfare programs. It is a pleasure to live in a country that has a national health service and where you see comparatively few people living on the streets. It is also safer in Portugal. It is horrifying to think that about forty-five percent (almost 400 million!) of all civilian arms in the world are in the USA, which is three times as many as any other country except the tiny Falklands. I consider myself to be patriotic, but I am dismayed by what has happened in the USA. Some Americans think that the USA is the greatest country in the world, but this is not an objective assessment based upon any established criteria but rather emotion.
By William J. Dominik from Lisbon on 12 Oct 2022, 11:42
Having read the article, and many of the comments I question that "Americans" are making decisions based purely on politics. US politics may have been divisive in the last decade but this is like many other countries around the world. Trump may or may not be everyone's favourite president, but I think it's a stretch to say that Americans are leaving the US because of him!
I believe the reality may be far simpler: For Americans (especially those retired or soon to be retired, say 50-65's) the dollar / euro exchange rate is a major factor.
Americans are getting everything at a 30% discount in Europe on anything they purchase. This euro decline has been steady over the past 6 months, coinciding with the 'surge'.
This article I think is ill-advised NOT to even mention this. My question is, why would an American not consider that with this exchange rate (0.97 euros to the dollar as I write this) Europe is a great place to retire to, as their pensions just grew 30%.
By Tony Williams from Other on 12 Oct 2022, 11:42
I respectfully disagree with your conclusion in the first paragraph, which seems to imply Americans thought Trump would do good things and they are disenfranchised that he lost his 2nd bid for the presidency. Absolutely incorrect as only around 1/3 of the country supports the conman, Trump.
People are disenfranchised because the Republican party continues to be a domestic terrorist group that is actively taking away the rights of citizens and openly attacking women, minorities, LGBTQ+, and poor people. We are disenfranchised at the gross wealth and income inequity that was significantly worsened under the Trump administration, and disgusted by the number of his fascist supporters that remain even with the irrefutable evidence of his being a traitor to the country. These same supporters embrace ignorance and selfishness as evidenced by the COVID pandemic response and their lack of caring.
I cannot speak for all Americans, but I can assure you that the ones that are trying to emigrate are not Trump supporters. They are Americans seeking a better life (like all immigrants) in a country that better reflects their values of community based, science and equality for all.
By Cher Taylor from USA on 12 Oct 2022, 12:24
This is a great B.S. !!! Americans, mostly retirees, are leaving the U.S. to seek countries with a lower cost of living (including and mainly those related to health expenses) great weather, security, etc. While Trump is a fascist, racist, and corrupt conman - and he's indeed a threat to democracy in the U.S. - the main drivers for Americans to leave the U.S. are those already mentioned above.

This article says nothing about why some Americans choose to move to Portugal specifically. It only says why they leave America. In many cases they're misguided, too. Liberal Americans imagine Portugal to be some idealized version of a progressive US city. They want it to be a cheaper San Francisco without the homelessness, crime, and other social problems that gentrification exacerbated. And now they're the ones gentrifying Portugal and trying to turn it into something they want it to be. While it does have some democratic socialist systems in place - especially with healthcare - and the Chega party is not nearly as large as MAGA, it also has a lot of social dynamics that we wouldn't consider progressive. Lots of racial inequality and even overt racism (like everywhere - I'm certainly not singling out Portugal), LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance are far below the US or UK, and there's a general "don't make waves" parochial attitude that a lot of people have (especially older generations). Don't mistake silence and politeness for full acceptance and approval. I see the Portuguese as being similar to the British in that way - the baseline level of outward respect is high, but don't image you always know what they're thinking. And btw, I agree about Trump, and saying that Biden is just as bad or worse is frankly deluded. He's not great - none of them are - but he's also not a dangerous lying racist moron.
By Chico Ortiz from USA on 12 Oct 2022, 17:08
This article does accurately describe why we moved here to Portogal last year. We put the plans into motion before Biden's election in case Trump really did pull off a coup. We reckon the threats to democracy in the USA are not finished -- the next Republican nominee doesn't have to actually win if Republicans control the House and enough attorneys-general offices to go against the popular vote . Thus our Portuguese residency gives us important flexibility going forward should the US political situation deteriorate. We truly appreciate Portugal for allowing us to create a new life here.

Thank you for the article and Wes for your comments. I am hoping to move to Portugal as quickly as I can, the major reason being the desire to spend the rest of my life (71 now) in peace. I don't see anything wrong with that goal. If one can avoid it, why would one want to spend the rest of his/her life in a country where hate and continuous chaos dominate the culture, along with an unwillingness on the part of individuals to accept ANYTHING they don't like? Those who are old enough remember that for most of our lives, there was a reasonably high bar of common decency, respect and selflessness. Most people adhered to it (yes, there were always bad actors and people who were self-absorbed, but they were in the minority). Since Trump's first comments about Mexicans and punching out a protester at a rally, people were given liberty to be nasty, vindictive, violent, racist and every other character trait I was raised to reject. And every day, just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it did. Let's begin with the hundreds of thousands that died unnecessarily because he denied Covid for so long. Some say that is murder. He could have done far more. Trump has always caused the chaos. It would take far too many pages to lay out all the ways in which he is determined to turn America into an autocracy just like the autocrats he loves so dearly. Suffice it to say that between Trump and Steve Bannon, that is the plan and, if it means civil war, so be it. The bottom line is that I firmly believe the bar has dropped so low that it can never be crossed again. I don't need that chaos and uncertainty at this stage in my life. Biden inherited a total mess and global issues beyond his control, and is at least trying to get the country back on track. So, I'm off to Portugal, where I have had strangers stop and ask if they could help me, where people are respectful, polite, and happier.
