In total, in 2023, there will be 13 mandatory public and religious holidays and one optional, Carnival, according to Dinheiro Vivo.

Three of these holidays will take place over weekends: January 1, Sunday (New Year), April 9, Sunday (Easter) and June 10, Saturday (Portugal Day).

When are the public holidays each month during 2023 in Portugal?

January

The first week of the year starts on a Sunday, so New Year's Day is one of the holidays that fall during the weekend.

February

The February holiday may be optional: Carnival Tuesday 21st. You may or may not be given this day, depending on the government, municipalities and companies.

"Carnival Tuesday can be observed as a holiday, when provided for in an instrument of collective labour regulation or in an employment contract (negotiable will of the parties)", according to the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT).

If the contract or collective agreement so determines, Carnival is a mandatory holiday like any other and must be remunerated accordingly.

For Civil Service workers, it depends on a decision by the government or municipalities, in the case of local administration.

April

In April we have the long Easter weekend - Good Friday is on the 7th and Easter on the 9th.

There will also be the possibility of combining these holidays with 25 Abril celebrations, which falls on a Tuesday.

May

The following month, there will be another three-day weekend. Labour Day (May 1) will be a Monday.

June

The holiday of Corpo de Deus will be on the 8th, a Thursday. The 10th of June, Portugal Day, will be on a Saturday.

August

During the height of summer there is also a holiday, the Day of the Assumption of Our Lady, on August 15th falls on a Tuesday.

October

The day of the Implantation of the Republic, October 5, will be on a Thursday.

November

November 1st is All Saints' Day and lands on a Wednesday.

December

In the last month of the year, you can count on three holidays that can turn into three long weekends.

The 1st, Restoration of Independence, and 8th, Day of the Immaculate Conception, are both on a Friday. Christmas Day, on the 25th, falls on a Monday.
