The municipality said in a statement sent to the Lusa agency that, under a protocol signed with Springfield and Anefa - National Association of Forestry Companies, "which results in the offer of 22 thousand trees", will hold on 27 November, a reforestation action in a protected area, in Desterro Forest.
The reforestation action "follows the project of forest recovery of burnt area, which began in 2020, and will focus on an area of about 20 hectares".
"On this day, actions will be carried out to plant native plants in the areas that were intervened last year (covering nearly eight hectares), continuing the work of controlling spontaneous vegetation, and the planting of trees in 12 hectares. In total, 22,000 trees will be planted, including alders, oaks, strawberry trees, willows and cork oaks," explained the Seia municipality, chaired by Luciano Ribeiro.
Mata do Desterro is owned by EDP and has been managed by Seia Municipal Council since 2007, through a loan agreement, with a view to making use of the resources existing on the site for research, environmental education, tourism and leisure activities.
With an area of about 136 hectares, the Desterro Forest, located in the heart of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, is essentially occupied by maritime pine trees.
Like other initiatives that have been developed in this area, the reforestation action scheduled for Sunday 27th is open to all those who want to collaborate, on a voluntary basis, said the Seia municipality.
The organisation advised participants to wear boots, warm clothes, waterproofs, and work gloves, and to bring a small snack and water.
Participation in the activity includes insurance, but transport is the responsibility of each individual.
Those interested in taking part can register on the Seia municipality website (at https://cm-seia.pt).
Nothing will grow but maritime pine trees. These people are naïve.
