According to a report by Expresso, the average gross monthly salary grew, in accumulated terms, 22% in Portugal in the period between 2015
and 2022, but in real terms, the increase was only 5.7%, less than 1% per year.
There are also sectors with drops of more than 20%, as is the case of banking
and insurance.
Among the activities that recorded losses in the purchasing
power of the average salary is also the electricity and gas sector (-21.5%) and
Public Administration (-9.7%). On the other hand, the biggest increases
occurred in sectors such as extractive industries (27.1%), manufacturing
industries (24.9%), agriculture (22.1%) and accommodation and catering (19.4%),
areas where there is a greater incidence of the minimum wage, whose value has
grown.
