With the aim of having better air quality, the Lisbon City Council wants to extend the ban on the circulation of vehicles prior to 1996 to the entire territory of the city, according to a report by Expresso in interviewed the vice-president, Filipe Anacoreta Correia. The municipality thus wants to prevent the entry of more polluting cars from non-residents.
The idea is to prohibit the entry of polluting cars throughout the city, favouring electric cars in the centre. The municipality led by Carlos Moedas intends to reduce the circulation of cars in the city, according to certain criteria. For the time being, the municipality is monitoring to see if it is necessary to implement new measures as well as studying other possibilities.
Since the end of April, the municipality has introduced changes to traffic, asking drivers not to cross the riverfront and Baixa. This measure is being evaluated and may be included in a future plan for the Reduced Emissions Zone (ZER), to be presented between the end of this year and the beginning of the next. Expresso also reports that the Chamber still wants to reduce speed limits in some areas and increase them in others.
Obviously been looking at Sadik Khan the mayor of London that in August will start charging £12.50 (€14.32) per day to none compliant cars in London.
His excuse is the same, air pollution, but it has been shown it will do nothing. It’s just a money grabbing scheme.
Get ready Lisbon, they are coming for your cash with lame excuses.

And all the new Range Rovers, large Mercedes and BMWs will continue to pollute whilst that old Renault 4 pays a tax or is banned. If the ban goes ahead, the people should just stop paying their IMI and IUC. When will these politicians work out that they work for the people and not the other way round?

Great initiative. Hope to see over 85% electric cars in Lisbon within 3-5 years. Many of the wealthy areas already see great improvements in terms of air quality. I just hope that heavy polluting lorries and heavy traffic gets banned as well on smaller central streets.
