ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal stated on Monday that Madeira Airport had activated a contingency plan in view of the bad weather in the region.
On Monday, 28 flights were cancelled and another 12 diverged.
According to a note released by ANA, adverse conditions, particularly heavy rain, are expected to continue throughout today, with teams at the terminal being reinforced to support affected passengers.
The company also adds that the catering units will operate outside normal hours, as will the service desks of airlines and different companies.
In the note, the company indicates that “the weather forecast from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) points to an increase in storm intensity during today.
“Due to this situation, we appealed to passengers to try to confirm their trips before going to the airport, to avoid unnecessary crowds”.
The south coast and the mountainous regions of the island of Madeira are under a red weather warning due to the forecast of heavy and persistent rain.
The red warning, the most serious on a scale of three, was issued by the IPMA and is in effect until 15:00 today.
