In the published analysis, DREM indicates that, on December 31, 2022, the estimated population consisted of 119,062 men (507 more than in 2021) and 134,197 women (59 more compared to the previous year).

The migratory balance (difference between those who entered to live in the region and those who left, ceasing to be residents of the archipelago) was over 1,911 people.

According to DREM, this was a “determining factor for increasing the region's resident population this year [2022], since it overlapped with the unfavourable evolution of the natural balance (difference between live births and deaths, which went from -1,131 in 2021 to -1,345 in 2022)”.

The largest population increases occurred in the municipalities of Porto Santo (26.0‰) and Santa Cruz (10.5‰).

At the opposite extreme, with a negative growth rate, are the municipalities of Santana (-11.6‰), Machico (-5.6‰), São Vicente (-0.8‰) and Calheta (-0.5‰ ).

The assessment of Madeira's demographic situation concludes that there continues to be a reduction in the proportion of young people (population under 15 years old), which represents 12.5% of the total population (12.8%, in 2021), while the elderly maintain the growth trend, being 20.6%
