In a statement, Metropolitano de Lisboa explained that the intervention, “with a total investment of one million euros”, will begin today and should be completed by the end of the year.

According to the company, the five elevators at the Alameda station are 23 years old and the average life expectancy of this equipment, with similar characteristics, “is around 25 years, meaning they are at the end of their life”.

According to the Lisbon Metro, the replacement of the five elevators with “more modern and resistant” equipment will be carried out in phases so as to “not cause problems for those who wish to use the station”.

The construction and installation work on the new elevators will allow access between the surface and the platform for people with reduced mobility, particularly wheelchair users.

On August 31, Metropolitano de Lisboa announced an investment of a total of 13.75 million euros in the modernization, access and replacement of mechanical equipment (escalators and elevators) at stations.

According to the company, the Lisbon Metro has 117 elevators, 234 escalators and 10 moving walkways throughout its network.
