The new equipment represents an investment of 1.1 million euros, supported by CHUA, with the support of the Algarve Intermunicipal Community and 14 of the 16 municipalities in the region, with Faro and Silves being the two that did not contribute.

Speaking to Lusa, the coordinator of the new facility said that the idea for the center “has two essential aspects: maximizing the number of patients consulted and providing quality observation”.

According to João Rosendo, in this sense, a team of doctors, nurses and assistants was created who are responsible for patients “from beginning to end, patients who are referred by the different health centers”.

João Rosendo said that all normal ophthalmology procedures will be carried out at the center, “whether in the assistance area during the consultation, cataract, conjunctiva, eyelid surgeries and, soon, the possibility of retinal surgeries”.

“Later, corneal surgeries may also be carried out, we have members on the team who already do this, and refractive surgeries, procedures that will remain in a second phase”, he noted.
