“The morning shift is now starting and we still have to evaluate [adhesion]. Even so, during the night the strike was quite significant in the health sector and in garbage collection. At 10pm on Thursday there was no longer any rubbish collection”, said the coordinator of the Common Front of Public Administration Unions.

Sebastião Santana highlighted that minimum services were ensured in hospitals in emergency rooms and operating rooms.

The coordinator of the Common Front also indicated that he had information on closed schools, but still without concrete data.

The Common Front of Public Administration Unions expects "a large turnout" for the national strike taking place today, predicting "severe disruptions" in various public services, such as finance and social security, in hospitals and schools.

Sebastião Santana said that "several schools are expected to close across the country" as teachers and non-teaching staff unions announced their support for the protest.

The Common Front of Public Administration Unions (CGTP) announced on October 9th the national workers' strike that is taking place today, considering that the Government's proposal for salary increases for 2024 is "miserable".

For next year, a minimum salary increase of 52 euros or 3% is planned for public administration workers.

The Common Front demands an increase in wages by at least 15%, with a minimum of 150 euros per worker, to face the "brutal increase in the cost of living".
