Sarah Ahmed, a leading UK authority on the wines of Portugal, kindly agreed to make a return visit to the prestigious college to update members on what’s happening in vineyards on our own doorstep. The tutored tasting of eight wines, specially chosen by Sarah to highlight the region’s exciting new developments, was followed by a 3-course lunch in the college restaurant served by the students.

Said Sarah Ahmed: “The Algarve wine region is undergoing an exciting renaissance and revolution. Quality-focussed, ambitious producers such as Morgado do Quintão, Monte de Casteleja, Cabrita, Arvad, João Clara and newcomer, Alagoa Velha, are pushing the envelope with terroir and technique. Another ‘t’ is attracting attention too - ‘tradition’, specifically traditional grape varieties and, especially, Negra Mole. My selection showcases the region’s potential to produce a diverse range of styles that are brimming with character.”

With focus again on the Algarve, members enjoyed their lunch with a selection of wines from nearby Quinta da Tor whose Grande Reserva Algibre Blend 2017 was recently awarded Best Algarve Wine 2023.

And the service provided by the college staff and students was equally deserving of praise and recognition. Members agreed what a great reason to go back to school!
