It can also be a time of isolation and loneliness, if people don’t have friends and family around them.

In pagan times, the 25th of December was celebrated as the birth of the sun- as the days start to get longer after the winter solstice. People used to make little lights to bring festivity into their villages. This tradition has been continued using Christmas light displays and decorations. Vikings used to burn a yule log for good luck and to bring the light into the darkness of their homes.

Focussing on celebrating the beginnings of the light and the lengthening days is a way of anchoring ourselves and bringing the joy within, to help counteract the feelings of being overwhelmed or feeling alone.

Light Visualisation

Sit somewhere quiet if possible- it can even be in your car, as long as you’re not driving!

Take a deep breath in, hold, and then release slowly- ideally your out breath should be longer than your inhale.

Repeat 3 times.

Place your feet flat on the floor if it’s comfortable to do so.

Imagine roots growing from the souls of your feet, through the floor, the earth until they connect to the roots of trees under the ground.

Now breathe into your heart, feel the air expanding your heart space.

Repeat 3 times.

Imagine this positive energy, which is now inside your body, expanding outwards into your aura (energy field around hour body).

Now visualise the pale winter sun, its warmth is enveloping your body and pulsing its way into your aura.

Take deep breaths, and with every inhale, draw that beautiful golden light into your body. Feel it flooding your body with heat.

The light is pushing out any not so positive feelings, and filling you love, warmth and bubbling positivity.

You are anchored, safe and enveloped in a blanket of love and support.

Stay for a few moments in this beautiful space.

When you’re ready to return, take a few inhales to anchor in this light and gently come back into the room.

Use this quick technique whenever you need to during the festive period and know that you can draw the light within to help.
