The new rules, set out in Directive (EU) 2021/2118 and which should have been transposed by December 23, 2023, clarify the scope of protection for victims, facilitate the control of mandatory car insurance and create a compensation mechanism in the event of insolvency of the responsible insurer.
The directive, according to a statement, also makes it easier for policyholders to change insurers, ensuring equal and non-discriminatory treatment of claim declarations.
In addition to Portugal, 16 other Member States received notification letters, with a period of two months to report compliance with transposition.
