This reduction is related to the fact that taxpayers paid less money to the State over the last year: "Taxpayers throughout the year 2023 had more money in their pockets and advanced less to the Portuguese State and this is positive. Of course, the ideal for withholding taxes is that they are almost equal to the IRS that is paid in the end", explained Paula Franco, in statements to RTP.

Regarding the changes planned for this year - which will be discussed in Parliament - the president said that it is necessary to "wait for Friday" to "see what the final proposal for fees is and in which levels it changes".

The first IRS refunds began to reach taxpayers' accounts at the beginning of this week, at a time when more than two million declarations had already been submitted.
