In the 11th edition of Primavera Sound Porto, the festival director, José Barreiro, highlights from the line-up, firstly, Lana Del Rey's return to the national stage. “Tickets for that day have been sold out for over a month, also because of Justice,” he said in statements to Lusa.

The American singer, who will release a new album in September, and the French duo perform on Friday, a day that also includes Lambchop, The Last Dinner Party, Wolf Eyes, The Legendary Tigerman, Classe Crua and Samuel Úria, among others.

José Barreiro recalled that bringing together “established artists with bands that have enormous growth potential for the coming years” is part of Primavera Sound Porto’s DNA, and that “parity between men and women on the lineup is a concern for the organisation”.

“Once again we have a poster that I think is mostly female,” he said.

The headliners of the first day contribute to this, three women: SZA, PJ Harvey, and Mitski.

“When we started this [trying to guarantee parity in the poster] in 2017 it was risky to do so. The future proved us right because at this moment it is much easier [to have a joint poster]. The biggest sales champions in the industry are currently women”, stated José Barreiro.

On Thursday, in addition to SZA, PJ Harvey and Mitski, Amyl and The Sniffers, Royel Otis, Blonde Redhead, Ana Lua Caiano, and Amaura, among others, will also perform at the festival.

This year, the task of closing Primavera Sound Porto is the responsibility of Pulp and The National, on a day that includes a tribute to the North American musician and producer Steve Albini, who died on May 8th and was at all editions of the festival with Shellac. On Saturday, Arca, Billy Woods, Expresso Transatlântico, Conjunto Corona, Joana Stenberg and Best Youth also perform.

This year, the bands and artists are spread across four stages rather than five.

This is, in fact, “the only notable change” in the venue. “We stopped doing the Beats stage, the electronic stage, which we did in pavilions attached to Parque da Cidade”, said José Barreiro.

In 2023, the festival grounds increased in area, taking advantage of the works that the Porto City Council carried out in the space, connecting Parque da Cidade to the sea, and the music lasted four days, instead of the usual three, a way of celebrating the ten editions.

“There are a lot of younger people buying tickets, but the age group that remains strongest at Primavera is over 40,” he said.

The maximum capacity per day is 40 thousand people and foreigners “represent more than 50% of the people who buy a ticket”.

Most foreign buyers arrive from Spain and the United Kingdom, but in recent years the organisation has seen a growing interest in the festival from North Americans.
