According to Jornal Económico, Wild boars caused around eight million euros of damage to corn fields in 2023, the sector's producers' association indicated, demanding the implementation of an action plan.

“According to a survey promoted by Anpromis [National Association of Corn and Sorghum Producers], the damage caused by wild boars in its members’ corn fields represented, in 2023, an extremely high value, around eight million euros”, they indicated in a statement.

Given what it says is the “uncontrolled increase” in the wild boar population in recent years, the association demands the “immediate implementation” of the Wild Boar Strategic and Action Plan in Portugal, presented in 2023.

Anpromis met with the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) this week, stating that “National corn producers cannot continue to be penalised for the lack of implementation of a plan that was presented last year and which inexplicably has not yet been implemented”, argued the president of Anpromis, Jorge Neves.

Corn cultivation occupies an area of approximately 110,000 hectares in Portugal, with an estimated average annual production of 700,000 tons of corn for grain, according to data from Anpromis.

Portugal has a corn self-supply capacity of around 30%.
