Data from the survey on Summer 2024 Perspectives, carried out by the Portuguese Hotel Association (AHP), “reflect a positive outlook for the Portuguese hotel industry, with strong demand from both the domestic market and the main external markets for this time of the year".

As for reservations for June, 70% of respondents indicate a reservation rate between 50% and 89%, revealed AHP. For 43%, the reservation rate is even above 70%.

By region, Madeira stands out, where almost all respondents have a booking rate above 70%, followed by the Azores with 86% of respondents, which record bookings above 70%.

In July, at the national level, 67% of respondents recorded a reservation rate between 20% and 69%. In the Azores, almost all respondents have reserves above 70%, and in Madeira, 98% are above 50%.

By contrast, in Alentejo, only half of those surveyed have reserves greater than 20%, this being the region with the lowest average reservation rate.

In August, which is considered the strongest month of the year, 63% of respondents registered reservations between 20% and 69%. In the Azores, all respondents already have reserves above 70%. In Madeira and the Algarve, the vast majority have booking rates above 50%.

In Greater Lisbon, North, and Center, the majority of respondents register reservations between 20% and 69%. Alentejo continues to have the lowest reservation rates, with more than half of respondents recording reservations below 50%.

Finally, according to AHP, in September, more than half of respondents in the Azores (71%) reported booking rates above 70%. In Madeira, almost all of them have rates above 50%. In the Algarve, half of those surveyed have reserves greater than 50%.

Main markets

Respondents were also asked about the main markets for the summer months. 73% of respondents indicated the national market in the top 3 of the main markets, such as the United Kingdom (52% of the sample), followed by the Spanish market (45% of respondents). The United States of America and Germany followed, for 38% and 31%, respectively.

When asked about the main booking channels used for the summer months, respondents pointed to Booking as the main channel, followed by the website itself.

With regard to the performance of the main hotel operation indicators, compared to the summer of 2023, 89% of respondents responded that the occupancy rate would be the same or better, with the Center and the Setúbal Peninsula being the most optimistic.
