“These are two properties that had been transferred to the Chamber, through lending contracts, several years ago, by the Institute of Financial Management of Social Security, with the municipality now assuming full management”, the mayor of Tavira specified to Lusa.
The two properties were rehabilitated by the municipality - the church in 2016 and the building where the so-called Casa dos Pescadores once operated, in 2022 -, in a global investment of 850 thousand euros, 362 thousand contributed by community funds.
According to Ana Paula Martins, “for some time now the municipality had expressed an interest in taking full management of the properties, given that the rehabilitation works were supported by the municipality”.
According to the mayor, the Church of São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, known as the Church of the Waves, “maintains a strong connection to the fishing community, the same with the Compromisso Marítimo building, where for many years the so-called Casa dos Pescadores and the Social Security services operated from”.
Ana Paula Martins explained that the building now houses the headquarters of the Parish Council of Tavira, “thus remaining at the service of the population”.
