The results of the 2022/2023 Household Expenditure Survey show that the average annual expenditure associated with housing amounted to 9,390 euros, while food stood at 3,091 euros and transport was around 2,888 euros.

The INE survey also revealed that expenditure on restaurants and accommodation represented 8.6% of average annual household expenditure.

The study also indicates that a “smaller portion of family expenditure” was directed to culture, recreation, sports and leisure, and education services in predominantly rural areas.

The survey also concluded that the average annual expenditure was higher in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (26,891 euros) and that the Algarve surpassed the national average.
