The University of Aveiro (UA) has launched a public tender to convert the former Quimigal warehouse into a 46-student residence, with a base price of more than €3 million. The projected four-story student housing complex will include 28 flats - most of which have double rooms - that can house up to 46 students.

As stated in the project proposal, “The building is intended to function as an academic reception 'Hub' for the city, that is, a portal or first 'landmark' that welcomes, informs and supports any and all students or people arriving in Aveiro for the first time and who wish to join the University of Aveiro”. In order to transform the abandoned Quimigal warehouse building close to the train station into a university home, the project concept calls for its renovation and modification.

Six individual studios with kitchenettes and private bathrooms are planned in total; two of them (one on each floor) are designated for individuals with limited mobility, along with two individual rooms and two individual flats. Additionally, residents will have access to a laundry room with washing and drying machines for their clothing as well as a support space with an ironing board and countertop. There is an outdoor space in this laundry room where homeowners can hang their clothes to dry.

The program also provides study/coworking spaces and other areas for informational support, like a restaurant area and a store where pertinent information about UA athletic, cultural, and other events is available for purchase.
