To benefit from this support, the official residence of teachers will have to be more than 60 kilometres away from the educational establishment where they teach, as explained to the Lusa news agency by the vice-president of Cascais City Council, Nuno Piteira Lopes.

“This measure is part of Cascais’ Local Housing Strategy and aims, first and foremost, to offer affordable housing to the population and essential professionals for the municipality, such as teachers”, he explained.

The mayor, who is also responsible for housing promotion, said that the local authority will immediately start by providing four houses, which will accommodate 16 teachers.

The houses are located in the towns of Bicesse, Cobre, Tires, and Torres, and were acquired by Cascais Council.

A further eight apartments will be made available, with a capacity to accommodate 24 teachers, as well as the Monastery of Santa Maria do Mar, with space to accommodate 44 professionals.

Cascais Council will also provide temporary accommodation, with 21 single or double rooms.

This temporary accommodation will cost between 275 and 400 euros and will be distributed among three institutions.

In total, 105 accommodation units will be made available for teachers.

Teachers placed in Cascais school groups are eligible for this support, and applications can be made through the municipality's website at www.cascais.pt.

According to Nuno Piteira Lopes, Cascais City Council will also provide housing for healthcare professionals and security forces.

“The lack of rental housing and the high cost of rent, combined with the fact that many of these displaced professionals already have housing costs in another part of the country, has made it difficult for them to find a place and sometimes inhibits their acceptance, with incalculable losses for the school and students in the municipality”, stresses the mayor.
