However, it does not have to be an overwhelming challenge. The Portuguese Lab by IAS is a specially designed initiative aimed at helping individuals achieve the A2 level of Portuguese - a basic yet essential requirement for those seeking permanent residency or citizenship. This program is tailored to make language learning accessible and manageable, ensuring clients can comfortably meet this important criterion.
In this interview, we delve into the inspiration behind the Portuguese Lab, its unique offerings, and how it supports clients through the process of learning Portuguese, making their transition to life in Portugal as smooth as possible.
How did the idea for the Portuguese Lab project come about? What inspired IAS to create this initiative?
The idea behind the Portuguese Lab was born out of a simple observation: many of our clients were facing challenges in meeting the language requirement for Portuguese nationality or permanent residency. We realized that the existing options did not fully cater to the unique needs of people who are busy, often nervous about learning a new language, and in need of a solution that fits into their lives seamlessly. By creating the Portuguese Lab, we aim to make this process easier, less stressful, and more accessible, ensuring that our clients can confidently achieve the A2 Portuguese language certificate, a crucial step in their journey.
What sets the Portuguese Lab apart from other language learning programs?
The Portuguese Lab stands out because it is not just about learning a language; it is about making the entire process of obtaining Portuguese residency or citizenship smoother and more personalized. We understand that everyone has different comfort levels and learning styles. That's why we offer two distinct paths. Our “Já Está” Platform is perfect for those who prefer a self-paced, exam-focused approach, helping them improve their daily conversational skills and prepare for the A2 certificate exam. Conversely, the PLA option is tailored for individuals who thrive in a structured learning environment and appreciate steady progress without the need for a concluding exam. This option provides structured, interactive learning without the pressure of a final test. Both paths are designed with our client’s success in mind, ensuring that they get the support they need in the way that suits them best.
Speaking of the different options, what are the primary differences between the PLE and PLA routes?
The main difference lies in the approach to certification.
The PLE route, supported by our “Já Está” Platform – a platform thought out and customized to the needs of our clients, is exam-oriented and designed to assist those who intend to take the A2 certificate exam. It is a flexible, self-paced program that covers everything from basic grammar to conversational practice, allowing students to prepare thoroughly on their own schedule. It covers everything from basic grammar to conversational practice. In this format, the student enrolls in a study aid platform, where they have to complete 112 hours. With our teachers' support, the “Já está” platform aims to prepare students for the CIPLE exam. With the “Já Está” platform, students can learn Portuguese at their own pace and according to their availability and timetable.
The PLA route, in turn, is designed for learners who prefer a guided experience without the pressure of a final exam. It is a comprehensive, 150-hour online course with continuous support from certified teachers. This route is perfect for those who want to achieve certification through regular class participation rather than testing. The main difference between the two options we present to our clients is whether or not they must take a final exam to obtain the A2 certificate in Portuguese. Throughout the program, you will participate in interactive classes led by certified teachers who guide you every step of the way. The focus is on practical language skills, so you will engage in activities that help you grasp the essentials of Portuguese. Upon completing the 150 hours, you will earn an A2 certificate, an essential residency or citizenship requirement.
Regarding PLA, to meet the diverse needs of our clients, we have partnered with two types of institutions. If you’re looking for a fully personalized experience, our bespoke partner offers flexible schedules, smaller class sizes, and even the option for private lessons. For those who prefer a more traditional approach, our public-school partner provides a structured program with set schedules—classes are held three days a week, three hours per day. While this option requires a minimum number of students to form a class, it ensures that the 150-hour program is completed within a predefined timeframe. Both options are designed to fit different lifestyles and learning preferences, ensuring every student can find the right path to achieving their A2 certificate.
Are the certificates provided after the completion of these courses permanent, or do they have an expiration date?
The certificates you receive after completing either route are permanent. The certification for the PLE track does not expire and is issued once you pass the exam. Similarly, successful course completion grants a certificate with no expiration date for the PLA track, ensuring you meet the language requirement for residency or citizenship for life.
Is the “Já Está” Platform and the PLA courses you partner with conducted entirely online?
Yes, every aspect of our program is fully online. We know that our clients lead busy lives, often balancing multiple responsibilities, so we have designed the Portuguese Lab to be as convenient and flexible as possible. Whether using the “Já Está” Platform or taking part in the PLA course, you can learn from anywhere, at any time, without compromising on the quality of your education.
What is the duration of the “Já Está” Platform and PLA courses?
The “Já Está” Platform, designed for the PLE option and exam preparation, typically runs for 112 hours.
The PLA track is an option that gives students access to the certification without the need for an exam, in accordance with the law. It runs for 150 hours.
Both programs are designed to be intensive enough to yield results and flexible enough for participants to balance alongside their other commitments. In the PLA option, the course duration will depend on the modality you choose. If you opt for a partnership with a bespoke partner, the duration will depend on the number of lessons you want to spend per week. In contrast, if you opt for a partnership with a public school, as the timetables are set in advance, the 150 hours are expected to be completed in 3 to 4 months.
In the event of a student missing a class due to illness or other justified reasons, is there a way to make up for the lost time without affecting their progress in the course?
For the PLE route, since classes aren’t mandatory, missing a session won’t hinder your progress; it just means you may need more time to complete the required hours. In the PLA option, you can miss up to 10% of the classes without affecting your eligibility for certification.
We understand that life happens, so we have built flexibility into the program to accommodate unexpected absences while complying with all legal requirements in place.
While the PLA option does not have an end-of-course exam, are there any assessments or tests students need to complete during the course?
Yes, the PLA option has no final exam like the PLE, but there will be continuous informal assessments. These might include assignments, participation in discussions, and practical exercises. We believe these assessments help you stay engaged and give you a sense of achievement as you progress through the course. Plus, they’re all online, with plenty of support and study materials to help you succeed.
Are there any supplementary study materials provided to help students with their learning outside of class?
Absolutely. We provide a range of supplementary materials to enhance your learning experience. Whether in the PLE or PLA track, you will have access to downloadable PDFs, practice exercises, video tutorials, and a community forum where you can connect with other students. Our goal is to create a well-rounded learning environment that supports you every step of the way.
Finally, what do you hope to achieve with the Portuguese Lab long-term?
Our long-term vision is to help our clients not only fulfill the requirements for Portuguese residency or citizenship but also feel more connected to the culture and community here. By offering tailored language support, we aim to make the transition to life in Portugal as smooth and enriching as possible. We want our clients to feel confident in their ability to communicate in Portuguese, which we believe is a key factor in successful integration and a fulfilling experience in their new home.

This is slightly incorrect as the A2 is not required for the permanent residency

In my opinion - it’s a very strange link to your website in the article below. Everything and every page is about investments!?? About money! Learning portuguese language? Nada? Even a short menu ”learning Portuguese” to the right in the webpage show nothing about learning portuguese. And the price!? Maybe the information is well hidden behind some menu about anything else. But there is no straight information or link on the main webpage. How much? Quanto custa isso? Hmmm…. Did I missed something?
