Although Ichkabal was discovered nearly 30 years ago, on 14 September visitors will be allowed into one of the oldest Maya archaeological sites in the country for the first time. Located 43km deep in the jungle of the Quintana Roo state, the ancient city dubbed "the Mesoamerican Egypt" reveals an unparalleled look at early Mayan civilisation.
The site covers three times the area of Chichén Itzá, at 30 square kilometres, and is a 1-hour 45-minute drive away.
