Between October 15th and 21st, 687 infractions relating to cell phone use were detected, according to a joint press release from the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), National Republican Guard (GNR) and Public Security Police (PSP).
Of these 687 infractions, 675 were registered on the mainland and the remaining 12 on the islands of the Azores and Madeira, according to a survey carried out by the three entities involved in the “At the wheel, the cell phone can wait” campaign.
4.7 million vehicles were also inspected for radar speed control, with 24,500 infractions, add the authorities, who also inspected 56,600 vehicles in person.
Last week, security forces also made 621 drivers and passengers aware of the negative and even fatal consequences of improper use of cell phones while driving.
During this last campaign, the authorities recorded 2,011 accidents, which resulted in six fatalities, 38 serious injuries and 611 minor injuries, and these cases are not directly related to the use of mobile phones, Lígia dos Santos, from GNR, explained to Lusa.
Compared to last year's results, there was a reduction in accidents and injuries: In 2023, there were 1,135 fewer accidents, two fewer fatalities, 12 fewer serious injuries and 333 fewer minor injuries.
The six fatal accidents last week (five men and one woman) occurred in the districts of Castelo Branco (1), Guarda (1), Lisbon (1), Santarém (1) and Setúbal (2).
