According to a note from the PSP, the campaign is part of the National Inspection Plan and will begin on Tuesday with “awareness-raising actions” by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) and inspection operations, which also bring together the GNR, “with special incidence on roads and accesses with high traffic flow”.
The objective is to “contribute to reducing the risk of accidents and to the adoption of safer behaviour by drivers with regard to driving under the influence of alcohol”, says the PSP.
“In Portugal, in 2023, one in every four drivers killed in road accidents had a blood alcohol level equal to or higher” than the legal limits and, among these, 73% had a rate higher than 1.2 grams of alcohol per litre of blood.
“Several scientific studies demonstrate that driving under the influence of alcohol causes various disorders, particularly at the cognitive level and information processing, as well as changes in the ability to react to unforeseen events and motor incoordination”, recalls the PSP.
Inspection operations, simultaneously with awareness-raising actions, will be carried out in Leiria (5 November), Figueira da Foz (6), Mamodeiro/Aveiro (7), Porto (8) and Setúbal (11).
This is the 11th campaign planned in the National Inspection Plan for this year, “actions carried out annually by the PSP, the ANSR and the GNR, since 2020, with themes defined based on the European recommendations established for each of the years”.
How about the Algarve? While you’re at it, start ticketing people for speeding and aggressive driving. The drivers in Portugal are dangerous and getting worse.
