Pedro Nunes Pedro, 59 years old, led the project 'Juntos Somos Mais Golfe' and, in the election on November 7, won with 46 votes.
The days following the victory were “intense” and dedicated, above all, to thanking all the supporters of the new team for their trust, as well as planning the next steps of the new four-year period, with a transition meeting with the still current management and the inauguration of the new corporate bodies, scheduled for November 26.
“Taking into consideration the 2024 budget, the immediate priority is to evaluate and prepare the budget for next year. Then, we will start to implement the projects we have in mind and evaluate and amplify those that are already in place”.
Nunes Pedro, former president of the Lisbon Sports Club, one of the four founding clubs of the FPG 75 years ago, alongside the Oporto Golf Club, the Club Golf Miramar and the Clube de Golf do Estoril, refers to the investment in training teaching professionals, in the creation of new public infrastructures (pitch & putt, driving range and 9-hole courses) in areas of the country that are less developed in terms of golf, and in school sports.
“I think we can make a difference given what was happening, without wanting to criticise the current management. I want the same result as Miguel [Franco de Sousa] for golf, more players, greater competitiveness, better and more conditions, but following a different path. Training base coaches, having more infrastructure and school sports are the foundations. The potential players are in schools”.
In addition to remembering that “in the last 15 years no new golf infrastructure has been created”, since the Jamor course, Pedro Nunes Pedro says it is essential, “after expanding the base of the pyramid, with the training of coaches, school sports and new public places”, to give “more competition to athletes to reach the top of the pyramid.”
“I’m not talking about internal competition. Our best players often have to compete with the European elite. We want to create a ‘Team Portugal’ to give this experience to amateurs and support professionals in the first two to three years of their career”, he added.
Believing that only in this way will it be possible to evolve and have a point of comparison between Portuguese players and the best European golfers, Nunes Pedro does not expect great results from high competition in the next two years.
“I’ll keep an eye out, but it won’t be the main concern. It will be tough, but the idea is to reap rewards in the medium term”.
In relation to international competitions, Pedro Nunes Pedro says that the Portuguese Open, eligible for the Challenge Tour, will be held in 2025 at the Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort, fulfilling the FPG contract with the host course, but the objective is now put the tournament back on the DP World Tour calendar.
The project to bring to Portugal, in the spring of 2025, an event from the Ladies Access Series, the second division of European golf, is already underway, according to Pedro Nunes Pedro.
