According to data from the Public Security Police (PSP), cited in a statement from the Chamber of Faro, crime decreased in the area monitored by the network of 41 cameras installed in 32 locations in the city, during the three months of operation.

Given the “positive impact” of implementing the first phase of the system operated uninterruptedly by the police, the city hall and the PSP have “agreed to move forward with a project to expand video surveillance”.

Video surveillance in the city of Faro was inaugurated at the end of August, in 32 locations selected by the PSP, based on the history of problems and complaints registered, aiming to prevent crimes and repress traffic violations.

Of the total number of cameras, 27 were installed in the shopping and nightlife areas and the remaining 14 on the city's six main roads, operating uninterruptedly 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Access to the system is only available to agents trained for this purpose and image extraction is only authorised for criminal investigation agents.

According to the Chamber of Faro, the provisional data for this year revealed by the PSP, “seem to demonstrate a stabilisation in general, violent and serious crime, in relation to 2023”.

Crime recorded in the city of Faro, in recent years, “has focused on crimes of computer fraud and communications or theft of opportunity, cases of extortion, particularly through the Internet or resistance and coercion against an employee”, highlights the municipality.
