The rise in staples, such as olive oil are not just attributed to war / drought / supply issues.
Supermarkets have used these events to inflate prices and haul in record profits. How do I know? Because although I am portuguese I spend time in various countries during each year.
For example, I buy salted Cod in Canada now sourced in Norway (same as the top cod in Continente) for cheaper. Gallo e,yra virgin is usually cheaper in Canada than Portugal, its source.
Supermarkets can get away with this because 1)consumers keep buying without complaining, and 2) governments stay quiet.
