Comparing with Tuesday's data, which recorded 948 deaths, today there was a 2.6% increase in deaths.

Regarding the number of confirmed cases of infection with the new coronavirus (24,505), DGS data show that there are 183 more cases than on Tuesday, representing an increase of 0.8%.

The North region has the highest number of deaths (556), followed by the Central region (196), Lisbon and the Tagus Valley (195), the Algarve (13), the Azores (12) and the Alentejo that registers in one case, the report on the epidemiological situation advances, with data updated until midnight on Tuesday.

Of the deaths recorded, 658 were over 80, 191 were between 70 and 79, 86 between 60 and 69, 28 between 50 and 59, and ten between 40 and 49.

Of the total number of infected people, the vast majority are recovering at home, totaling 21,082 (plus 33).

The data indicate that 980 are hospitalized, 44 more than on Tuesday (+ 4.7%), and 169 are in Intensive Care Units, minus three, which represents a decrease of 1.8%.

DGS data state that the municipality of Lisbon is the one with the highest number of cases of coronavirus infection (1,447), followed by Vila Nova de Gaia (1,322), Porto (1,187), Braga (1,012), Matosinhos (1,068) ), Gondomar (966), Maia (836), Valongo (699), Sintra (577), Ovar (556), Guimarães (543) and Coimbra, with 406 cases.

Since January 1st, there have been 243,655 suspected cases, of which 3,825 are awaiting test results.

There are 215,325 cases in which the test results were negative, says DGS, adding that the number of recovered patients increased to 1,470 (there were 1,389).

The North region continues to register the highest number of infections, totaling 14,715, followed by the region of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley, with 5,695, the Center region, with 3,340, the Algarve (330) and the Alentejo (214).

The Azores have 125 cases of covid-19 and Madeira 86.

DGS also records 29,568 contacts under surveillance by the health authorities.

Of the total infected, 14,503 are women and 10,002 men.

The age group most affected by the disease is 50 to 59 years old (4,136), followed by the 40 to 49 age group (4,119) and people over 80 years old (3,836 cases).

There are also 3,410 patients aged between 30 and 39 years old, 2,897 between 60 and 69 years old, 2,788 between 20 and 29 years old and 2,189 aged between 70 and 79 years old.

The DGS also records 401 cases of children up to nine years old and 729 of young people aged 10 to 19 years old.

According to the report of the Directorate-General for Health, 171 cases result from the importation of the virus from Spain, 137 from France and 88 from the United Kingdom. There are still hundreds of cases imported from dozens of other countries.

According to the bulletin, 48% of patients positive for the new coronavirus have cough symptoms, 35% fever, 22% muscle pain, 21% headache, 17% general weakness and 13% breathing difficulty. This information refers to 85% of confirmed cases.

The covid-19 pandemic has infected more than 3.1 million people worldwide and caused more than 217,000 deaths.

Nearly 860,000 patients were considered cured by health officials.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
