Lisbon Airport loses or damages just 0.16% of baggage and is on the list of airports with the best performance in baggage handling, ranking in 10th position, according to AirHelp.
The results, indicates AirHelp, are contained in a report on baggage management produced based on data from SITA and other lost baggage websites, and show that, by 2023, “a total of 36.1 million bags were lost, delayed or damaged around the world, affecting more than 5.2 billion passengers worldwide.”
“This is a slight increase compared to 2022 when 26 million bags did not arrive as expected,” says AirHelp, considering that “despite advances in baggage handling automation and the introduction of new technologies, the number of incidents continues high".
As for the causes, the most common were related to “the delay in the arrival of luggage at destination airports, with transfer errors being responsible for almost half of the problems (77%), followed by damaged suitcases (18%) or loss permanent (5%)”.

However, Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon performed positively, as only 0.16% of checked baggage was “lost, delayed or damaged, meaning that only one in every 609 bags suffers an incident”.
“This is, moreover, the only Portuguese airport that appears in the baggage management ranking”, highlights the company specializing in the defense of air passengers.
Among airlines, TAP also showed a positive performance, ranking in 42nd position, “with one in every 287 bags suffering an incident (0.35%)”.
AirHelp reminds us that passengers affected by baggage problems can receive compensation, which can reach 1,385 euros in the event of baggage breakage or delay. Passenger rights in case of lost or broken luggage can be found here.
