According to a report by www.sportbusiness.com, commercial free-to-air broadcaster TVI currently holds rights for Portugal’s cup competition in a deal from 2020-21 to 2021-22.
RTP had previously held free-to-air domestic rights-holder under a three-year deal.
“RTP will show matches from the third round onwards, and the deal includes the annual Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira contest between the winners of the Primeira Liga and Taça de Portugal.
The public broadcaster’s previous agreement was reported to be worth €3.5m per season in media rights fees, advertising and sponsorship components. Along with domestic coverage, RTP secured rights to show live games on its RTP Internacional and RTP Africa channels,” reports sportsbusiness.com.
Fernando Gomes, president of the FPF, said: “This agreement with RTP, which for decades was the main partner of the FPF in this competition, is a guarantee that the Portuguese will have the opportunity to see the Taça de Portugal Placard in the best possible conditions.”
He added: “I cannot fail to thank TVI for the way in which it has honoured its current commitment to the Placard Cup of Portugal, which will last until the end of the current season.”
Nicolau Santos, president of RTP, said: “RTP is pleased to resume this partnership with the Portuguese Football Federation and thus bring thousands of Portuguese people to the Portuguese Cup party, the most comprehensive and democratic sporting event in national football.”
