With 10,621 deaths recorded, global mortality in February 2022 decreased by 16.8 percent compared to February last year, despite an increase in the number of people with Covid-19 who died, compared to January.

In February this year, 1,118 people died from Covid-19, 126 more than in the previous month, equivalent to 10.5% of the total deaths in the month. Compared to February last year, 2,476 fewer people died with covid-19.

Between January 31 and February 20, 2022, the global number of deaths was higher than the five-year pre-pandemic average, but from February 21 to March 6, it returned to below the average for the same period between 2015 and 2019.

The 125,147 deaths recorded in Portugal last year were 1.2% more than in 2020, according to figures released by INE.

Births

The number of children born in January 2022 increased by 4.2 percent from the same month last year, with 6,257 live births.

The natural balance (difference between deaths and live births) remained negative in January this year (minus 5,461) but decreased in relation to January 2021, when the balance was -13,656.

According to INE, the natural balance in 2021 was -45,216, a more pronounced negative value than in 2019 (-25,214) and 2020 (-38,932).

Marriages

As for marriages, they increased by 40% in January compared to the same month last year, with 1,140 marriages, 326 more than in January 2021.
