The two companies will need a total of 46 new vehicles, announced the leaders of the respective carriers.
On the Metro de Lisboa, 24 new triple units (with three carriages each) will be needed for the expansion of the Red line, between São Sebastião and Alcântara, which should operate until 2026. The president of Metro de Lisboa, Vítor Domingues dos Santos, also admits that an additional 12 vehicles may be required.
The number of new trains for Metro de Lisboa exceeds the company's previous estimate of 17 triple units, advanced by the company's president in December 2021, in an interview with TSF and Dinheiro Vivo.
22 more trains for Porto
At Metro do Porto, 22 new vehicles will be needed, four more than initially planned by the company's president, Tiago Braga. There is also the option to buy 10 additional vehicles.
The new trains should arrive by the end of 2025 and will serve for the network expansion project, which provides for five new lines and the extension of the future circular line (construction of the Casa da Música-Asprela section). The public tender for this acquisition should begin in the last quarter of this year.
