According to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), in the first quarter, 37.6 million people were transported, equivalent to an increase of 1.1 percent compared to the first quarter of 2019. All other indicators remain below pre-Covid numbers.

In the first three months of the year, national airports handled 8.3 million passengers, corresponding to a growth of 465.7 percent compared to the same period in 2021, but a decrease of 25.4 percent compared to the first quarter of 2019.

In the same period, 46.2 million people were transported by subway, an increase of 135.7 percent compared to 2021, but a decrease of 25.8 percent compared to 2019. With a total of 28.7 million passengers transported, equivalent to 62.1 percent of the total (-0.8 p.p.), demand for the Lisbon Metro grew 146.3 percent compared to 2021 (-33.2 percent compared to 2019). Demand for Metro do Porto also increased significantly (+129.9 percent compared to 2021), with 13.8 million people being transported.
