The Assembly of the Republic today unanimously authorized the President of the Republic to travel to New York between July 11 and 14, at the invitation of the president of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
According to information provided to Parliament, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will participate in the ministerial segment of the UN High Level Political Forum (HLPF).
The head of state, who recently traveled to London and Andorra for the June 10 celebrations, has another trip planned before New York: he will go to Brazil between July 1 and 5, with visits to the cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasilia.
The Assembly of the Republic's consent to the travels of the head of state is a formality imposed by the Constitution, which maintains that the President of the Republic cannot leave the national territory without the authorization of the parliament.
