According to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), all regions of mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Region of Madeira have reported cases of human infection with Monkeypox virus, of which 509 (82.5%) were in the region of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo.

According to the DGS, of the universe of cases reported in the Epidemiological Surveillance System, most belong to the age group between 30 and 39 years old and are male, with four female cases, two more than a week ago.

The presence of the Monkeypox virus in Portugal was first detected three months ago, on May 3.

On July 16, vaccination of the first close contacts of cases began and so far 73 people have been vaccinated, out of the 104 contacts considered eligible (70.2%).
