Peter is thought to have been the first Bishop of
Braga from around 45AD to 60AD.He is thought to have been martyred for
preaching about Christianity.
In the 9th century it is said his body was discovered
by Felix the Hermit and is now in Braga Cathedral.
There are two fountains in Balasar and Rates with
connections to Saint Peter. He is believed to have been beheaded when he was
drinking from the fountain at Balasar. People believe that two hollows at the
fountain
were made by him kneeling.
The fountain at Rates has a stone that is believed to
cure sterility. His feast day is on 26th April and many towns and villages give pregnant
women and female animals that day off.
