The Government published in the Diário da República a new
resolution that aims to define "preventive measures, with a view to
guaranteeing the security of energy supply". The note includes a
recommendation to reduce the maximum speed limit on Portuguese highways from
120 km/h to 100 km/h.
In addition to this measure, according to Jornal I, the
Government also recommends the adoption of working from home, when possible,
and the increase in the use of public transport and when possible walking.
If citizens want to save on their oil and gas budget, they can decide for themselves to lower the heat and raise the foot from the pedal. No need for the government to meddle in, except of course more and probably higher speeding fines are expected to fill the governments pockets. Of course that's just me being cynical and no one in government would dare think of this.

A perfect way to reduce highway capacity. Imagine the congestion increase on the A-1 North and A-2 South of Lisbon!

It makes no sense. Hope it does not go through..

Work from home means more extensive use of internet which is one of the biggest consumpter of energy! Really not a good idea.

Is this a money making exercise if so with such limited traffic it’s a failure. Otherwise it’s simply daft what’s the road for ?

This proposal makes no sense at all. I have no problem reducing traffiic speed in towns and villages. Motorways were built to allow traffic to travel distances quickly. From my experience, motorways in Portugal are empty compared to many other countries. The motorways in Portugal are all toll-paying. Do the persons responsible for this proposal really believe drivers will pay tolls to drive at 100kms per hour? I believe that a rethink is in order.

Would anyone take any notice? few take any notice of the present limit. JW Lagoa

Enforcement of the current speed limits, will already contribute to safety and reduce consumption. New limits without enforcement make no sense.

Nobody wants even more rules... Let us drive....

They should encourage more cycling. This could be done by making drivers more aware and giving cyclists more room when passing. Portugal is a wonderful country to cycle in.

Who cares what speed limit will be ignored by locals - 100 or 1200

That will be great for the environment, won't it? My car is doing less per litre at that stupid speed since it isn't even in top gear then.

They just want more fines for income , already motorways are not used because of cost , the rail system is useless if travelling outside Portugal , and Airports are badly managed with long queues . Portugal is out of step with the rest of the EU
