The phenomenon is still being studied by biologists who, so
far, have not found an explanation for the increase.
According to SIC, the Atlantic Orca Working Group has
revealed that 51 interactions were recorded in 2020, a number that more than
tripled in 2021, to 185.
The behaviour of the animals is being studied by the
researchers. They advise the crew to immobilise their vessel and leave the
rudder loose or engage the reverse gear when they feel orcas approaching.
