Since September 2018, Gibraltar has played official
international matches as host at the 5,000-seat Victoria Stadium, under a
"specific exemption granted by UEFA", allowing the local team to play
at this stadium, although certain prerequisites were not met, "especially
in relation to lighting, stadium capacity and other more technical
infrastructure points".
This exemption was granted on the condition that the works
on the new stadium started in 2020/2021. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic,
work at the venue was postponed and, consequently, UEFA extended his exemption
until the end of the group stage of the third edition of the 2022 Nations
League.
The Football Federation of Gibraltar has clarified that it
will host two friendly matches in November, against as yet undetermined
opponents, which will be the last to be played at the Victoria Stadium before
being completely rebuilt.
The organisation also confirmed that the construction plans
for the new national stadium are at an advanced stage, with the works scheduled
for the second half of 2023.
Gibraltar is in Group B of the qualifying round, along with
Greece, the Netherlands, France and the Republic of Ireland.
