The strike was announced by the secretary general of the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof), which is part of the platform, during the demonstration in Lisbon on February 11.
At the time, Mário Nogueira stated that the teachers would go on strike again if they did not reach an agreement with the Ministry of Education, as happened last week after the last negotiating meeting on the recruitment and mobility regime.
Today, teachers in the districts of Coimbra to the north will be on strike. On Friday, it's the turn of teachers from the districts from Leiria to the south.
Schools will, however, have to ensure minimum services, decreed on Monday by the Arbitration Court, which considered that this stoppage “cannot be seen only as a one-day strike that will only cause the usual and legitimate disorders that any strike always causes”, but rather as “one more strike in a series of strikes that, as a whole, already threatens to jeopardise the right to education”.
According to the decision, teachers must guarantee three hours of classes in pre-school and 1st cycle, as well as three daily teaching periods per class in 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary education, in order to guarantee, weekly, coverage of the different disciplines.
On Saturday, teachers return to the streets with two demonstrations in Lisbon and Porto.
