According to monthly data by the Institute for Cinema and Audiovisuals, Portuguese showrooms received 1 million 94 thousand spectators in May, which hadn’t been achieved since December of last year.
In 2022, the one million spectator barrier was passed in July, August and December.
In terms of profit, may has also been the best month of 2023, with €6.4 million, lifting the year’s current sum to €26.3 million, 46.7% larger than last year’s €17.9 million over the same first five months.
The numbers for May this year are thanks to the releases of “Furious X,” by Louis Leterrier, which drew 442 726 watchers in its 13 days of exhibition, and James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy vol.3,” which filled 208 392 seats.
Lower on the list is Rob Marshall’s “The Little Mermaid,” with 93 thousand spectators, “The Super Mario Bros Movie” by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic and Pierre Leduc, bringing in 82 thousand watchers, and the top 5 is completed by Oleh Malamuzh and Oleksandra Ruban0s “Mavka: Soul of the Forest,” which garnered 32 thousand ticket sales.
Two May premieres appear on the list of most-seen Portuguese films: “Hardly Living” and “Living Hard,” by João Canijo, got third and fourth place, respectively, with 11 225 and 7092 spectators.
The most viewed national work this year is “Amadeus” by Vicente Alves do Ó, with 12 758 seats filled, followed by João Gonzalez’s Oscar-nominated “Ice Merchants,” seen by 11 544 people.
