The number of temporary contracts is increasing again in Portugal. After stabilising since the beginning of 2021, the weight of short-term contracts and other workers in temporary situations rose to 17.8% in the second quarter of the year, according to Jornal de Negócios.
The reversal of the trend had already occurred in the previous quarter, when the share of employees who had a short-term or limited-duration contracts increased to 17.2%, then reaching the historic lows recorded in 2022.
At that time, only Spain (one-tenth ahead) and the Netherlands (where 27.8% of employees had a fixed-term or limited-term contract) surpassed Portugal in this matter within the European Union (EU).
Wow! Three articles about employment on the same page, all leading the same conclusion… ‘over tourism’ only creates low paid, short term employment opportunities without any sustainable benefits for the local community that can lift populations into improved life styles.
