Top of the 2023 list is Laureles, in the bustling Colombian city of Medellín, the hometown of musicians J Balvin and Karol G.
According to Time Out, the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Laureles has a "pretty laid-back reputation" despite being home to the Atanasio Girardot football stadium and famous nightlife street La 70.
Five of the 10 coolest neighbourhoods are in Europe, with Copenhagen's riverside Havnen and Dublin's historic Smithfield section appearing on the list for the first time. In Asia, Hong Kong's bustling Sheung Wan neighbourhood is on the list, and the best neighborhood in the US is Mid-City, where you'll find some of the best food.
In 18th place in Time Out's "coolest neighbourhoods in Europe" is Costa da Caparica, in Almada, the only Portuguese presence in this year's edition. It is "a strip of tranquillity by the sea that some call 'Capifornia', in reference to its surf waves, long sandy beaches and good weather", says the magazine, in a text signed by Vera Moura, director of Time Out Lisbon. “Costa da Caparica has always been a summer destination, but in recent years it has welcomed a new international audience that is remodelling and revitalising the area,” she adds.
Time Out doesn't have the resources to research the places of genuine character and charm, and, like most tourist guides, will only recommend places likely to appeal to the mass market. Hordes of uncultured, uneducated people who will trample all in their path. Just as well Time Out isn't recommending anywhere near me!
