According to a report by CNN Portugal, the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies (APED) had already warned of the operational difficulties of replacement prices.
Retailers demanded that the measure be extended until January 10. Still, they are pleased with this extension: “We are very pleased because the Government recognised the need to do so,” the general director of APED, Gonçalo Lobo Xavier, told the newspaper, pointing out that this extension is “positive.”
When the Government announced the end of VAT Zero in 2024, APED called for an adaptation period, which had already been applied when the measure came into force. The replacement of VAT on the basket of essential products, which was suspended due to the increase in the price of these foods at the beginning of this year, will then take place on January 5.
I can see supermarkets rounding up prices of these products and more. Couple that with raise in minimum salary and the inflation of basic food will be in the region of 10%, perhaps more.
